Over time, our cells degrade and a buildup of degraded proteins, oxidized particles, and dead nuclei, mitochondria, and other organelles begins to occur. This speeds up aging and related diseases because your cells can’t replicate and function in a normal way.
Because many of the cells in your body need to last a lifetime, a unique mechanism has evolved to help the body dispose of these damaged cells and other waste. This is called autophagy. It is a natural regeneration process that happens at a cellular level, reducing the likelihood of contracting many diseases as well as increasing lifespan. In 2016, Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize for his discoveries of the mechanisms of autophagy.
Once triggered, your body’s very own built-in cleansing and detoxing system looks for dead, diseased, or broken cells. It first removes any useful components that can be recycled into new cells, and then burns the old cells for energy.
Autophagy is thought to have evolved from when our ancestors went through periods of fasting and sometimes starvation. It is the body’s response to this, to become stronger and more efficient.
By clearing out all these dead cells that are taking up space, and replacing them with healthy new cells, your body will start to function much more effectively.
When autophagy is activated, it will also fight inflammation at the cellular level, which brings another host of benefits. These include the protection of your cardiovascular system, reduction of bad cholesterol, reduced risk of cancer, neurodegenerative conditions, and other chronic diseases. It also fights infection and supports your immune system (it destroys virus cells!), as well as protecting insulin producing cells—keeping blood sugar under control.
