Supports brain health
European blueberries, or bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus), are small edible berries that grow on low-growing shrubs. Their season lasts from July through September.
The majority of bilberries are picked from wild plants because bilberries are very difficult to grow.
Blueberries resemble bilberries, though they are smaller, have darker blue-purple skin, and have a deeper purple center (blueberries have whiter flesh).
It is because of bilberries' deep blue color inside and out that they are one of the richest sources of anthocyanin, which is the polyphenolic flavonoid pigment responsible for the berries' deep color.
The antioxidant properties of anthocyanins enable them to have many beneficial biological effects.
In addition to flavonoids, bilberries also contain tannins, ellagitannins, and phenolic acids.
These high levels of polyphenols have been implicated in bilberries' innumerable health benefits, including the promotion of cardiovascular and metabolic health, but most importantly, the maintenance of eye health and vision [1].
Bilberries may offer the same (or even greater) cognitive benefits as blueberries because they contain a greater amount of brain-healthy anthocyanins.
