The Breakfast Fuel That Holds My Energy and Focus Until 11

If your mornings fade by 11, look at what you burned at breakfast before you blame the night.

Coffee, butter, oil, avocado, lime and a jug of water on a kitchen counter

You know the feeling. The morning starts fine and then gets heavier. By 11 you're in the kitchen again, the work already harder than it should be, and the obvious answer is that you slept badly. So you promise yourself an early night and do the same thing tomorrow.

I did that. I'd reach 11 already looking for something else, after cereal, toast, or a sweet drink. I thought the night had caused it.

What I hadn't been told was this: the fuel you choose at breakfast decides how your morning goes.

What happens when you wake up

After sleep, your body is already running on stored fuel. Then you eat a bowl of carbohydrate, and that changes it.

Here's the simplest way I can put it. Cereal burns like a spark. Ketones from the oil burn like a log. A spark is quick and bright, and then you need another one. A log burns slowly and keeps the room warm.

Cereal burns like a spark. Ketones from the oil burn like a log.

To get the log, you eat the right fat at breakfast. Your liver turns that fat into ketones, and ketones become the fuel I run my morning on. That fuel is what holds my energy in my body and the focus in my head. Keep the carbohydrate out of breakfast, add the fat, and the morning stays on ketones.

Energy, focus, and how the morning feels

When I run on ketones, the morning feels different from the inside.

Energy. It's steady. I don't feel it rise and then go.

Focus. My head stays clear and stays on the job.

The body and the head together. My body feels settled and my head feels sharp at the same time.

This breakfast holds my energy and my focus until at least 11. That's what happens in my mornings. Here's exactly what I do, from my book Morning Momentum, so you can try it tomorrow.

The method

1. Begin with the oil

  • MCT oil, the C8 kind.
  • Start with 1 teaspoon, on your food or from the spoon.
  • Build up to 1 tablespoon.

2. Set the week

  • Five days with no carbohydrate at breakfast.
  • Two days with a moderate amount.

3. Then choose your breakfast

The green blend

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cucumber
  • The juice of 1 lime
  • Half an iceberg lettuce
  • 1 celery stick
  • The oil, from 1 teaspoon up to 2 tablespoons

Blend and drink.

The coffee

Butter in coffee sounds odd, I know. It's how I get the fat that becomes ketones.

  • Put 2 tablespoons of medium-roast coffee in a French press. Exhale is the coffee we recommend.
  • Pour on filtered water. I use water from the Ninja Jug, which filters it and adds calcium, magnesium and potassium.
  • Leave it for 4 minutes and press.
  • Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter from grass-fed cows.
  • Add the oil, starting at 1 teaspoon and working towards 2 tablespoons.
  • Blend until frothy.

No milk. No sugar.

Can I skip the coffee?

Yes. Take the oil on your food or from the spoon, or have the green blend. The fuel is the point, not the cup.

Tomorrow morning

Tonight, don't promise yourself an early night. Promise yourself a different breakfast. Tomorrow, take the teaspoon of oil, make the coffee or the blend, and leave the cereal in the cupboard.

Then, when 11 comes round, check in. Notice your energy. Notice your head.
